Snapchat: No More “Perfect” Photos

Snapchat is a great app that can help you share your experiences and emotions with the world and express yourself in ways that are unavailable in most other social media apps. However, you can still use Snapchat as your regular messenger if you prefer to - but you’d be missing out on all the fun! There’s a lot to tell about Snapchat, so let’s start with some facts and numbers.

The idea of Snapchat came to three Stanford students in 2011, and a few months later they released the first version of the app under the name “Pikaboo”. One year later there were 25 images shared in the app every second, and by the end of 2012 over one billion images have been collectively sent by Snapchat users. This was definitely a success, and Snapchat had to be quickly redesigned to accommodate the needs of the rapidly growing user base. The new version of the app hit Google Play and App Store in 2013 and continued to attract users at an astonishing pace. Today Snapchat has over 150 million active daily users who share over a billion snaps every day.

Snapchat: The Haven of Digital Privacy

Now that you know how big Snapchat is and how fast it has grown, you may be asking yourself what the fuss is all about. Well, the Snapchat app is a unique way of sharing your daily experiences and joys with friends because anything you send on Snapchat (images, videos, and text messages sent on Snapchat are usually referred to as “snaps”) can only be viewed for 10 seconds by default. Of course, you may choose not to make the content disappear once the recipient has seen it, or you can even make it disappear faster - Snapchat allows you to send messages that disappear in 1 to 10 seconds after having been opened.

This particular feature is actually the reason behind the success of Snapchat, Originally, the app was meant to become an “employer-safe” alternative to Facebook which would allow people to share content that they wouldn’t want potential employers and other strangers to see on their page. The fact that messages can only exist for 10 seconds inside of the app encourages users to share photos and videos that would otherwise have been considered too embarrassing or “stupid” and not shared at all. According to a survey conducted in 2016, the majority of regular Snapchat users value the app because it is fun and innovative, so its privacy aspect does not seem to be that important for the user base.

However, this does not mean that Snapchat developers stopped caring about their users’ privacy as well. All data sent within Snapchat is safely encrypted and nothing is stored or further reused in any other way. What’s more, Snapchat users are unable to save any photo or video that has been marked as private by the sender to their devices. The sender is also notified if the recipient takes a screenshot of their snap. This way you have maximum control over the content you share.

Having Fun in Snapchat

As for the “fun” aspects of Snapchat, there’s plenty of those, too. First, you can draw over the photos you share with friends, which opens up a lot of possibilities for creativity and humor. In addition, there is also a variety of filters and photo editing features for you to play with. For instance, you can remove objects from your photos and have them replaced by app-generated backgrounds, highlight a certain object or people against a contrasting background, play videos in a loop, and much more!

The Geofilters function brings an additional layer of fun to traveling and discovering new places. Based on your location, you gain access to special stickers that are only available in your city or country, and you can use them to customize your snaps. If you’re feeling particularly creative, you may even design your own Geofilter and publish it for everyone to use. An extension of this feature, Geostickers, provides you with a selection of location-specific stickers to be used in conversations or applied to photos.

The innovative Lens and World Lenses features allow users to apply cool 3D filters, effects, and animations to their photos and videos in real time. Lens relies on advanced facial recognition technologies to offer numerous effects for portrait shots, while World Lenses uses augmented reality to integrate a variety of 3D graphics into your snaps.

You may be surprised to find out that you can also send and receive payments directly from Snapchat. This handy bit of functionality was added to the Snapchat app in as early as 2014, and is powered by Square. This way, you can finally return the ten dollars you borrowed from your friend weeks ago without leaving the private chat!

Finally, no Snapchat review is complete without mentioning that it can also function as your regular messenger. You can exchange text messages, send photo, video and audio files, and even have video chats with up to 15 people simultaneously. Of course, all this functionality is present in most other communication apps, and it seems rather boring in comparison to other Snapchat features, but it is always nice to have the opportunity of conventional texting or video calling if you want to share something serious or important with your friends.

As you can see, there’s a lot of great functionality available in Snapchat to help users be at ease about the content they share. After all, according to the creators of Snapchat, the app was meant to be a way to relieve the pressure of having to lead a “perfect” life and prompt users to share “imperfect”, real-life photos that capture the essence of who they really are. So, don’t hesitate to start your Snapchat download and enjoy the freedom of sharing short-lived digital content!
